On the mat

Thai massage on the mat

A clothed session at floor level, for anyone who likes to be moved as well as pressed.

Thai massage is a hands-on tradition from Thailand. You lie on a padded mat in loose clothes, and your therapist works from the floor beside you: pressing with palms, thumbs and forearms, and guiding your legs, hips and shoulders into slow stretches.

  • 60, 90 or 120 minutes

  • No oil, and you stay clothed

  • Each stretch shown first

What happens

From the feet to the head

  1. 01

Step 1: A word before you lie down

We ask how firm you like it and which areas to leave alone, and show you where to lie.

  2. 02

    Step 2: Legs and hips

We start at the feet and work up the legs. Stretches are shown first, and you can say no to any.

  3. 03

Step 3: Back, shoulders and arms

Steady pressure along the back, with seated or side-lying stretches if you choose them.

  4. 04

Step 4: Neck, head and a rest

We slow down at the end and leave you a minute to rest before you sit up.

Good to know

Pressure, clothing and who should ask first

  • Pressure

We ask first and check again partway. Lighter or firmer is always your call.

  • Clothing

Wear loose clothes you can bend in. We give you a blanket, and work around what you keep on.

  • The right to stop

You can pause, change position or end the session at any time, for any reason.

  • Ask your doctor first

If you are pregnant, or have had recent surgery or an injury, ask your doctor or midwife before you book.

Who works on the mat

Anong and Anuwat

Most mat sessions are with the two of them. Ava takes mat sessions too, early and late in the day.

  • Anong Srisai in a pale blue tunic, standing beside a treatment table with folded towels

Anong opened Tamarind and learned Thai massage from her aunt. She keeps the pace slow and takes most first visits on the mat. She speaks Thai and English.

  • Anuwat Chaiyasit in a white tunic holding a rolled towel beside a table in a bright room

    Anuwat Chaiyasit

    Licensed massage therapist

Anuwat is Anong's cousin. He works with steady, firm pressure and long stretches, and takes the Saturday sessions. He speaks Thai and English.

Questions about the mat

Do I need to be flexible?

No. We take each stretch only as far as you choose, and we skip any you would rather not do.

Is there oil on the mat?

No. Mat sessions are dry, and you stay clothed the whole time.

Can I wear what I wore to work?

If you can bend in it. Many people bring loose trousers and a soft top, and change when they arrive.

Book a mat session.

Evenings until 8, Monday to Friday.
